Crime View meeting August, 2009 for the month of July, 2009.
Synopsis of briefing held August 19, 2009 covering the prior month, July, crime activity.
Calls for service in the month of July was the highest this year. Day shift reported 620 calls while the night shift had 716 for a total of 1,336.
Traffic Bureau Statistics
- Traffic Collisions 22. This number is still down -13% from last year.
- Traffic Fatalities 0
- Personal Injury Collisions 5. This is one less than last month. We are still down -36% from last year.
- Property Damage Collisions 17. One more than last month
- Non-injury Collisions 17. No map pattern except three occurred on Kraemer and three on Rose at spread out points of the map.
- Motorist Passenger Injuries 4. This is two less than last month and we are down -51% from last year.
- Pedestrian Injuries 0
- Bicyclist Injuries 1
- Hit and Run Collisions: 6. Not typical to see single digit results. This low number is attributed to the impound yard, taking vehicles that are not properly licensed off the road.
- Hazardous Cites: 384. This is 66 less than last month.
- Parking Citations: 1031. This figure is 197 less than last month and probably attributed to the sporadic functioning of the street sweeper.
- Driving Under the Influence Collisions: 0. Compared to last year, we see a drop of -59%.
- Driving Under the Influence Arrests: 11 Four less than last month. The map shows three clusters of this type of crime:
- Qty: 4 at Kramer Blvd and E. Yorba Linda Blvd.
- Qty 3 in the Atwood area.
- Qty 3 in the La Jolla area
- Have Been Drinking Collisions: 0
- 30 Day impounds: 78. Ten less than last month.
Note: The top three factors for vehicular collisions was in order of importance: unknown 41%, speeding 23%, turning 23%.
Crimes Against Persons
- Homicide: 0
- Rape: 0
- Robbery: 5. This figure looks small but it figures out to be a 21% increase for the year when compared to last year. The majority of robberies for the month occurred on Thursday and Friday between the hours of midnight and 4am. The map shows no discernable pattern. One incident was gang related and occurred just north west to Atwood area.
- Aggravated assault: 0
- Non-aggravated assault: 12. Majority of assaults took place on Sundays and Tuesdays between 8pm and midnight. Nine of the assaults were domestic violence related. One map cluster of incidents took place in a triangle of the city bordered by Placentia Avenue, 57 Freeway, 91 Freeway and E. Orangethorpe. All other reports were randomly spotted across the city.
Property Crimes
- Residential Burglary: 11. Looking at the numbers for each month this year, we see steady figures hovering between 6 and 8. June it drooped dramatically to 3. July it spiked with 11. When compared to last year, we are still down -11%. The map does show a cluster of 6 burglaries in a small area bordered by Chapman Avenue, E. Crowther Ave, the 57 Freeway and N. Kramer Blvd. Most of the total city incidents are a result of open garages. The majority of residential burglaries for the month of July, 2009, took place on Friday between 4pm and 8pm.
- Commercial Burglary: 7. Commercial burglaries for July occurred most frequently on Sundays and Thursdays between noon and 4pm. Looking at the map, no pattern is seen.
- Vehicle Burglary: 14. The majority of vehicle burglaries took place on Tuesday and Saturday between midnight and 4am. No map pattern was seen.
- Grand Theft: 16. One detective in the crime view meeting characterized this "anything not tied down" is being stolen. Grand thefts of the month of July occurred most frequently on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 4pm and 8pm. Do not get the impression that this is a rising statistic for the city. When compared to last year, the total figures are exactly the same, 82 total for the year.The Placentia Police Chief raised concern about this type of crime because it can be prevented by the citizens taking action. Keep your garages closed and locked. Remove anything of value from truck beds. Please lock side gates, house doors and your vehicles. The map fails to show any crime pattern.
- Petty Theft: 13. Petty thefts occured most frequently Tuesday through Saturday between noon and midnight. The map for this type of crime shows no pattern.
- Vehicle Theft: 5. Last year the figures spanned between 5 and 10. This year the figures span between 5 and 10 but we have 8 less incidents resulting in a decrease of -14%. Vehicle thefts for Placentia in the month of July occurred on Tuesday beween 4am and 8am and 8pm and midnight. Map shows a slight cluster of 2 stolen and 1 recoved vehicles just west of Kramer Blvd, south of Chapman and north of E. Crowther Ave.
