IRS Email Scam

The following warning was received from Kerry Boyer, Information Security Office of California State University, Fullerton.

Announcement

With tax season upon us, a new wave of email scams are being seen on campus and across the Internet where cyber-thieves are sending out what appear to be legitimate IRS notices telling the receiver that they are eligible for a substantial tax refund.

This is just the latest phishing scam trying to trick users out of their passwords and/or credentials. The email links to a bogus IRS site that asks for personal details such as social security number, date of birth, and mothers maiden name.

What’s required of me?

These types of emails can be safely ignored and deleted. The IRS never initiates contact with taxpayers via email, especially regarding a refund.
